Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise helped her develop a love for artwork and inspiration. Her aunt worked the evening shift in the role of a nurse so that she could pursue her love of theater and literature throughout the day. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how art can be used to engage people. DuVernay was trained by her mother, who had a social conscience, and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and brought up. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town of Selma Alabama. Her time in Selma led her to direct a movie that focused on The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay earned her graduation certificate of Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay was a student at University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she obtained diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to look over the residence of one member of the jury. She was also asked to take a look at their trash. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was handed, DuVernay was inspired to start a new career in public relations. DuVernay was hired right from college to be an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. In 1999, she founded her own private company for public relations, called The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, her agency also created a variety of promotions and lifestyle networks like those like the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
